Great North Run September 2018
September 9th, 2018
Following a group warm up before the start with about 50,000 other runners, the gun went off at 10.40 am with the eventual race winner Sir Mo Farah leading the way. The start of the Great North Run follows the A167 out of Newcastle City Centre gently downhill and over the famous Tyne Bridge. It’s very easy to set off too fast and that’s exactly what I did. The atmosphere generated by the fantastic Geordie crowds lining the route and a Red Arrows fly by just after crossing over the Tyne seemed to go straight to my legs. At one point early in the race I glanced at my watch and realised I was running at 4.30/km pace which, if maintained, would get me to the finish in 1 hour 31, a totally unrealistic target! Around mile 9 the hamstring niggle sustained in training flared up with a vengeance and I had no choice but to slow down to a gentle jog.
Without the encouragement of the spectators or the iced lollies on offer it would have been easy to pull over and give up. The last 4 miles were tough however on cresting the final hill and viewing the sea front at South Shields I somehow managed to find some energy reserves. Ignoring my hamstring, I increased my pace and managed a sprint finish for the final 200 metres.
On reflection, whilst I am not happy with my finish time of 2.08, I had a great day and would enter the event again. Note to self ‘start slower next time’.
